In the times of pain and suffering we need all the good things that we can possibly manage to hold on to. Yet in those difficult times we typically forget to recharge, refuel, and resource.

I too have been overwhelmed by the wars and natural disasters that have just kept on going this year. I have felt overwhelmed by all the emotions. The grief and sadness for innocent people killed on both sides. The anger at those seeking easy revenge and not considering long term peaceful solutions. The fear for those I care about who are receiving threats for their peace activism.

At best I somehow barely manage to deal with this emotional intensity, at worst I blame myself for not doing enough, not helping enough, not donating enough. I question my own humanity and my goodness. I feel ashamed for my selfishness. These deep dark states only leave me depleted and without any energy to act. And to change anything, to help, we need to act!

This is a reminder to me and anyone else who needs it. Do not stay stuck in the state of despair. Allow yourself to experience something positive, joyful, and happy too. Despite the darkness and violence, there are good people and good news out there. There is love and friendship. There are small daily pleasures. Fuel and recharge in whatever way you find most helpful to you…

So, I will just savour my strawberry tart today while writing this short message to the world. I am grateful for being able to enjoy such an indulgence, while I am sending the wishes of peace, happiness, and joy to those who currently may not be able to meet their basic needs. I do so just to recharge, just to rekindle my spirit, so I can do whatever I can tomorrow to inspire some change and donate to ease the pain of those who have already suffered too much.

Wherever you are today, whatever is possible for you – if you have a few minutes to remember that there is also good in this world – I invite you to do so. If it is helpful and you enjoy meditating, here’s a short meditation on happiness and joy you can use to generate some positive emotional states to recharge too.

“Within you, there is a stillness and a sanctuary to which you can retreat at any time and be yourself.” – Hermann Hesse
