Embrace Spring: Finding Joy in Seasonal Change

The winter period in the Northern hemisphere is coming to an end. Personally, I was impatiently waiting for the moment when the temperatures would rise, and the sun would make a comeback. Living in one of the Scandinavian countries in wintertime of short, cold and dark days is really no fun. On top of the usual winter blues, I managed to catch two separate viral infections since the middle of January. I had to cancel social engagements and spend several weeks isolated at home. None of that helped me generate much joy or gratitude!

With the dark period almost over, I expect things to change. I look forward to longer, warmer and brighter days which will allow me to spend more time outside in nature. I look forward to Easter and the travel I have planned around the holidays. I look forward to spending more time with friends and family. I certainly expect that this major shift in external weather conditions will finally help me enjoy life a bit more again.

Yet, I am also aware of the danger of such expectations. We cannot fully predict or control what will happen, so it is better to expect a bit less “rosy colored” outcome. Basing our internal state on any external circumstances is also shortsighted. If I enjoyed my life only when the weather was perfect and I was completely healthy (for a person with migraine condition it is hardly achievable goal), I would not enjoy my life much 😉

Still, the smell of the spring air and blooming of the flowers brings me a lot of joy. Regardless of the season and other external circumstances though, we can always practice being more grateful and satisfied. There are many practical ways to feel more joy daily – from a simple gratitude journaling to small kinds of kindness. Gratitude and generosity often travel together – we can both give and receive for a more wholesome and fulfilled life.

I often express my gratitude in my meditations. There are many people, animals and things in my life making my days on this planet unique and special. Remembering what I receive with each breath and each step I take, helps me appreciate the limited time I am given. This is difficult to do while rushing from one activity to another. Pausing to take that breath or step slowly and deliberately serves as the best reminder.

Recording guided meditations, teaching meditation classes, and facilitating interest groups is how I try to give back to my communities. I am often overwhelmed by the appreciation I receive in all these groups – even when I ask for no feedback. It warms my heart and provides much needed motivation and energy to continue.

My latest offering includes a free online meditation class where you can drop-in each week to learn a bit about mindfulness meditation, let yourself relax during a live guided meditation, and connect with like-minded people. You can easily sign-up for the class by visiting this page. We will meet on Tuesdays and the first class is scheduled for May 6th, 2025. I look forward to starting this new journey with everyone who would like to be more mindful – all meditation experience levels are welcome 😊

Until the live classes start, you are most welcome to browse my YouTube channel for your favorite meditation. Perhaps try this little spring gratitude meditation practice:
